When we woke, it was still dark. Greyish light struggling to break through the blinds. We were warm, but I could feel the frigid outdoors, even under the heavy cloud of downy blankets ... sweaty little feet leaving a damp imprint on my t-shirt. We laid there for a few minutes. Not wanting to ruin the moment, I hardly dared breathe.
Lazily, quietly, we made our way down the stairs. She thumped down on the carpet to color, still in a sleepy daze. The back door eeked as I heaved it open. Our spaniels' nails clacked across the hardwood, as they raced, barreling out into the frost. Maile's head snapped up: "Ohhh, Teh-Bear. Ohhh, Ches-che," she said with love, shaking the sleep from the dark hair falling over her eyes.
Quickly, I checked the weather. Snow. Cold. "Today's going to be a pajama day!" I declared aloud, to no one in particular. Maile didn't so much as look at me. She was deep in artistic thought, creating a two-toned Minnie masterpiece. Mauvelous, royal purple, mauvelous, royal purple. Deftly, she alternated hues every few seconds. "Peek, puh-ple, peek, puh-ple."
It was almost perfect.
Giggles, laps around the ground floor of our home as we yelled "Ruuuun! Ruuuun!" Chocolate-chip eating, This Little Piggy wiggling, delicious nap-taking. Laugh-out-loud funny requests, koala care-taking, snow watching, game inventing, three-syllable word saying.
Time well spent.
i absolutely loved your writing in this post. i felt like i was reading a book, no joke. those kind of days are the loveliest and that picture of your little princess made me smile. pure innocence and sweetness right there! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Leah.
DeleteI love your post and your writing. I agree with Leah - It is like reading an amazing book. Your daughter is so precious :) I just love your blog and with your husband away with work - This is an amazing blog for him to see you guys and won't miss the precious moments because you record it all. I so wish I started my blog when Peyton was real tiny.

ReplyDeleteThank you, sweet Eden. I've actually been inspired by you lately. The thought and intention you put into your posts is really something special. We should all strive to blog as you do!
DeleteI feel like it's so hard sometimes in the busyness of day to day to remember how important times like these are, but they are so refreshing for everyone involved. What a beautiful mama you are :)
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you, Christina. As you say, though, aren't these days wonderful, when we think to create them?
DeleteThank you for your kind words!
You write so beautifully. I felt like I was there.

"CURING" that is the perfect word to describe days like this. Made my heart feel {warm} <3 ... and made me want to be a small child again!!! XO
ReplyDeleteAh, thank you Brittany! Warmth was exactly what I was hoping to achieve with this post!
DeleteI think, especially as mamas, some days we just have to ALLOW ourselves to be small children. We have to put all of our grown-up mess out of our minds and just be. Something I say to Maile a lot when I'm not sure what she's trying to communicate is, "Can you sign it, or show me? Mama is just a silly grownup." I actually think there's a LOT of truth to that!
<3
Beautiful post. I can almost imagine your lovely day, seems kinda dreamy and perfect. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you, sweet Marie!
