"Blue-Collar" Blessings

Today I'd like to send you, dear friends, over to a site to which I contribute: Real Oilfield Wives. I'm particularly proud of my latest piece ... discussing the fact that Tim isn't college educated, and both the blessings and challenges that come with the "blue-collar" label.

I'd love to read your feedback, too! Do both you and your partner or spouse hold university educations? What dynamic does education bring to your relationship? I can't wait to hear your thoughts!

  1. I hold a bachelor's degree, although it isn't necessary for my field of dental hygiene. I don't feel that it gave me any more edge or advantage than a lot of my associate degree counterparts. Although, now I'm at home with 3 rugrats, so I'm earning a whole new degree in motherhood. :) My husband went on past his bachelor's to go on to get his DDS degree in dental school...and now wants to go on and get his MD in oral surgery. It's exhausting, and I hope he'll be happy with his career in the long run. Someday I would like to stop being students and start LIVING!

  2. Excellent article, Katie! My husband actually enlisted in the Army, even though he was qualified to be an officer. Many people are very successful without college degrees, or without even using them. I think it's just the way our society views those without a college degree. I also find that many assume that if you're a SAHM then you certainly didn't go to college. In the 10.5 years my husband and I have been married he's been a preacher, an Edward Jones rep, a soldier, and a teacher. Three of these jobs did not require a college degree, even though he has several -- Master's Degree, too. I have a BBA in Buisness Information Systems and haven't used it at all! Sorry for the rambling... Just wanted to share since you asked. I think it's wonderful that your so proud of your husband! :) I feel very successful because I'm taking care of my three kiddos and several pets! :)

    1. I've run into those same assumptions, being a SAHM, Leah! I hold a BA in International Relations, and did my Master's work in International Human Rights. I have used my education, but not quite the way I thought I would! Now that I'm a SAHM, I like to think that at least some of that education is being passed on to Maile. :) And I totally agree -- I feel successful taking care of Maile, two dogs, a cat, and now two frogs! Hehe. It takes a special woman to stay at home with her kiddos.

  3. I'm currently working toward my PhD and my husband is an electrician. Honestly, he is the smarter one of the two of us!

    1. I love that you're working toward your PhD, Audrey -- I don't think I knew that! I'd like to work on my PhD at some point, too. Right now, it isn't in the cards, but who knows what the future will hold! Your comment made me smile, too. ;)
