What We Wore: Tomboy Edition

I get asked a lot where I pick out Maile's clothes. This is both a source of pride and laughter for me, because as a young SAHM on a budget, I try so very hard to either shop the sale section, or buy secondhand -- for both myself and Maile. Vintage frills and complicated outfits? While I find them precious, they just aren't for our girl. My mom told me recently that Maile is a tomboy, and though my knee-jerk reaction was to come to Maile's defense, I ended up smiling and saying, "You know, she is."

Miss Maile is a lady on so many levels, but when it comes to "coes" and getting "thdessed," she just wants to be comfortable. Tim and I, both athletic types, are much the same. And I, for one, kind of love that our sweet babe is just as excited as I am when we score a new-to-her pair of "puh-pull" Converse kicks.

On Maile: Hair Clips: Baby Wisp | Tee: The Children's Place | Jeggings: OshKosh B'Gosh | Shoes: Converse, thrifted (similar here)

  3. She is such a little cutie! and her outfit doesn't come off as tomboyish, just a cute sporty girl. that's what i think. she's just a doll!

  4. Kaela is the same way! She doesnt even own one pink shirt! I just love the "normal" colors way better on her, and I think they are so much cuter.

    1. I love "normal" colors on Maile, too. I have to admit, though, that one of the only colors she really knows so far is pink! Haha. I guess it's her favorite. I think she's a well-balanced little girl, though, which is nice.

  5. Super adorable!!! love the outfit! Jade had her fist pair of converse as a baby :) this year we thrifted a pair of glittery cupcake low tops :) but she wears them with leggings and skirts because she's way more girly than any child of mine should be!

    1. Haha! Love that! Maile sometimes likes to play dress-up, and she adores me doing her hair, but she just isn't into the frills, really -- which is okay by me!

  8. Awww, I love that. There is nothing wrong with being a tomboy. I myself was very tomboy in grade school.
And Maile rocks converse! She has the same put-puhl ones I have! I love that you put what she says in quotes. There is nothing cuter than toddler language. My mom told me that I am the only person that knows what Jeremy is saying lol

    1. Haha! Sometimes I think I'm the only one who knows what Maile is saying, too. I even have to translate for Tim once in awhile (though I try not to, 'cause it drives him nuts, LOL).

  10. Well hon, if you end up with anymore of Ellie's clothes, we will be your source for all of the frilly stuff! ha ha! Ellie is the OPPOSITE! She hasn't worn pants in over two years! The kid insists on a skirt or dress every single day!! lol

    1. Haha! And I'm sure she'll love them, too. I'll just be throwing leggings on her under the cute little skirts and stuff. She'll rock 'em, just as long as they don't get in the way of her fun! ;)

I think it's so cute how she insists on a skirt or dress. Maile's big thing is her hair. She loooves having her hair done, and always says / signs "pretty" when I'm done. It melts me!

  11. I definitely think this look is so adorable!! If our next one is a girl, I will be on the look-out for more tomboy-esqe clothing, it's my fave look! Maile is beautiful!! (and those purple converse sneaks are the cutest things ever) xo

    1. Aaactually, I just did some thrift shopping for my sister, who was looking for some "new" play shoes for my nephew Michael. Picked up a pair of Stride Rite sneakers, and a pair of Timberland hiking-style shoes for him.

If you're ever in a bind looking for something for James, let me know! We have some really great thrift stores for kids in our area, and I visit one, in particular, at least once a week. I typically check out the boys side anyway! :)

  13. skinny jeans on toddler girls are the CUTEST! Caroline has three pair of the ones from Target and wears them all the time! I do like to put her in dresses a lot of the time too though. I think it's having a boy first...although I'm NOT a fan of the frilly/lacy/over the top stuff. Just simple and pretty. And wow - Maile is just so beautiful!

    1. Maile had a pair of turquoise skinnies from Target, and they were my favorite! She outgrew them in the length, though (even though she still had like 2 inches in the waist, haha).

I actually wish Maile was more comfortable in dresses, sometimes, because (especially at Tar-jay) I always see the sweetest things, but I love her little active looks, too. :)

      And you are so sweet!

  14. Oh she's the sweetest little thing! Skinnies and converse = the cutest.

  15. Cora is NOT a tomboy. I've already had two boys, so I've done the boy thing. Cora does, however, have a ton of Children's Place tshirts. I ♥ Children's Place!

    1. Haha! Maybe I'm more relaxed about it since she's our first. I can imagine if there were two boys in front of her, that I'd be putting her in a lot of dresses, for sure.

I love Children's Place, too! For some reason, I was "afraid" of it for awhile, because some of their stuff looked like a glitter bomb exploded in the store, but I've been checking it out a lot more, and they really have great stuff. Awesome sales and coupon deals, too!
